Auraria Campus, North Classroom Building, 1200 Larimer St, Denver CO 80217
The Colorado Youth at Risk Career Exploration Day is a chance for youth to meet professionals in a variety of different career fields and learn about what it takes to do what they do!

Workshops: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This year we have added workshops that will enhance youth’s resume and interview skills, job seeking strategies, networking techniques, and provide information about college opportunities.

Professionals and Youth One-on-One: 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Volunteers representing over 60 professions will be available to provide a forum for youth to meet and talk informally to professionals in their field of interest (law, law enforcement, medical, teaching, construction, sales industry, artists, business owners, information technology, etc.).

All youth are invited! Please pass along this information to any youth or youth-serving organizations that might be interested in attending!
Lee Culbertson Recognized at the Annual Kaiser Permanente Summit Banquet for Outstanding Achievement in Community Service ...

Lee Culbertson Recognized at the Annual Kaiser Permanente Summit Banquet for Outstanding Achievement in Community Service

As a Teen Parent Advisor at Kaiser Permanente, Lee works as a counselor assisting pregnant young women and their families by ensuring her clients have a healthy pregnancy and empowering them for a life of independence and self-reliance. Lee was drawn to Kaiser Permanente’s’ philosophy of social responsibility and community outreach while promoting healthy lifestyles. Lee says her career not only fits her professional aspirations but “it also fits with my heart” as does her community service and volunteer efforts at nonprofit, Colorado Youth at Risk.

Lee began volunteering with Colorado Youth at Risk (CYAR) in 2008 as a pro-bono mental health counselor and a mentor to two teenage youth, Victoria and Courtney. She describes her relationship with her mentees to be “one of the most rewarding in my life”. Lee has also supported Colorado Youth at Risk as a member of the silent auction committee, breakfast committee and mental health counselor at CYAR’s Launch Course- which is the foundation of CAYR mentoring communities built at a 4 day mountain retreat. In total, Lee has contributed over 360 volunteer hours to Colorado Youth at Risk.

Colorado Youth at Risk relies on Lee and other volunteers to make valuable contributions to the organization by donating time, money and supplies to the organization. CYAR volunteers are highly skilled professionals and come from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers are key in helping CYAR deliver successful programs in a fiscally responsible way. In 2011, 402 volunteers, including 305 mentors, were active at the agency representing 43,408 volunteer hours, not including Board of Director volunteer hours.

Kaiser Permanente has been a longtime supporter of Colorado Youth at Risk. The organization will sponsor the Colorado Youth at Risk’s 2nd Annual Possibility 5K Run/Walk on July 22 in Washington Park. The event is an investment in the Colorado Youth at Risk dropout prevention program which empowers teenage students through community-based mentoring and intensive training. CYAR is grateful to have Kaiser Permanente’s partnership and sponsorship of the eventwhich showcases the powerful relationships created between Colorado Youth at Risk mentors and mentees. Registration is open to the public and active at www.possibility5k.org.

Colorado Youth at Risk (http://coyar.org; www.possibility5k.org), founded in 1993,Colorado Youth at Risk aims to reduce the number of high school dropouts, match students with adult mentors and provide students with a sense of their place in the future. At the core, Colorado Youth at Risk programs are built on one thing: relationships. It is no different with our corporate sponsors and we work together to bring you optimum brand recognition through ongoing event and marketing collateral as well as employee engagement opportunities. Our approach ensures that the Colorado Youth at Risk audience is well-informed about your brand and your company is engaged as a partner. For more information on corporate sponsorship and partnership please contact Ashly Overturf at 303.623.9140.

2012 CYAR Touchstone Celebration Sponsored by ITT Technical Institute On May 15th at 5:30 pm ...

2012 CYAR Touchstone Celebration Sponsored by ITT Technical Institute

On May 15th at 5:30 pm student graduates, mentors, families and supporters will come together at the City Park Pavilion to celebrate at the
2012 Colorado Youth at Risk Touchstone Graduation Event. This event celebrates the successes of the Manual 4 and George Washington 6 Colorado Youth at Risk mentoring communities and high school graduates. These graduates have been involved with Colorado Youth at Risk for a minimum of 2 years and have completed both the Steps Ahead for Youth and Touchstone programs.

The Graduation Event is the pinnacle celebration of Colorado Youth at Risk’s (CYAR) programming and mission. CYAR is a proven dropout prevention program designed to support students from the 9th & 10th grade through high school graduation. The event highlights and acknowledges 27 area high school students who will be graduating from Manual High School, CLA, New America, Colorado High
School Charter, DC 21, Thomas East High School, Contemporary Learning Academy, Thomas Jefferson High School and George Washington High School. CYAR begins mentoring programs with students at George Washington, Manual, East and Aurora Central High Schools. As students
transfer schools, CYAR is committed to support youth regardless of the school they attend.

Colorado Youth at Risk is committed to providing one on one mentoring, community based mentoring and intensive training focused on social, emotional and academic empowerment for local high school teens. The accomplishments of these 27 graduating youth
demonstrate the impact of the program as CYAR continues to have a 90% youth graduation rate compared to 52% and 48% in Denver Public Schools and Aurora Public Schools respectively. In addition, many of the graduating students have demonstrated increased personal responsibility, strengthened relationships and gained an understanding of their individual future vision and goals.

The Touchstone Graduation celebrates the student academic accomplishments as well as the relationships forged between graduates and mentors throughout their high school experience. It will highlight the importance of mentoring and empowering teenage students to make positive life choices which lead to a positive future.

The event also highlights Colorado Youth at Risk’s goal to ensure each student graduates with a post-secondary plan in place. CYAR is proud that many of the graduating youth will be furthering their education all over the country and have enrolled at University of Colorado, Boulder,
Community College of Denver, Georgia Perimeter College, Colorado State University, Clark Atlanta University, US Marine Corps, Metro, CCD, CSU,
Northeastern Junior College, Regis, Long Island University, Hastings College and the Colorado School of Mines.

The Touchstone Graduation will be May 15th at the City Park Pavilion from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. The Graduation event will feature dinner and an awards ceremony as well as pictures and presentations which acknowledge the achievements of the graduates and
mentors. ITT Technical Institute is the inaugural sponsor of the event. ITT Tech has committed to partnering both financially and
programmatically with CYAR to fulfill the mission that each youth graduate with a post-graduation plan in place. The partnership has involved mutual referrals for student enrollment and mentor recruitment and in 2012 will additionally include an employee back to school drive and fall “Focus on the Future Event” dedicated to school achievement and career development.
